Don Van Ostenberg, Ph.D.

Professional Experience
Don began his career as a salesman, and later earned a degree in Vocational Rehabilitation.  He went on to become the first vocational counselor at Pine Rest Hospital.  Don has served as a Psychologist in charge of an active treatment unit, Director of Hospital Research, and Director of Internship Training. Next, he founded his own psychology practice which today consists of a team of 13 mental health professionals. His expertise in employee selection, corporate culture and leadership development has created tremendous demand for Don’s services.

Consulting Experience

  • Board of Directors
    Provides consulting services focusing on leadership challenges, selection of senior executives and succession planning.
  • Employee Selection
    Utilizes employment testing to measure motivation, cognitive style and personality. He works with clients in various industries such as accounting, automotive, construction, manufacturing, medical services, retail foods and a wide variety of human service organizations. 
  • Leadership Development
    Works with executives to lead employees in a manner that is consistent with their corporate culture, values and mission.
  • Management Consulting
    Provides executive consulting, problem solving and teambuilding services in Michigan as well as Europe and South America.
  • Psychological Assessments for Athletes and Coaches
    Collaborated with Pondera Advisors to create the Virtual Coach Sports™ Program.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Calvin College
  • Master’s Degree in Vocational Rehabilitation from Michigan State University
  • Ph.D. in Counseling and Psychology from Michigan State University

Personal Information
Don and his wife, Barb, live on the shores of Lake Michigan. They are empty nesters with children spread from Alaska to Texas. Barb works part time as a secretary. Don and Barb enjoy traveling, walking daily, and are leaders in the development of a new church in Grand Haven.  Don has served as chair of a church board of trustees and the board of a marital counseling center, vice chair of a community mental health board and is one of the founders and faculty members of the Leadership Renewal Institute.
