Roger Nemeth

Professional Experience
After receiving his B.A. in Sociology and History from Western Michigan University, Roger went to the University of North Carolina (UNC) and completed his M.A. and PhD in Sociology. He taught briefly at UNC and then returned to West Michigan to join the faculty at Hope College (HC). Roger has remained at HC and has become one of the premier researchers on the Reformed Church of America in the world.

Roger has conducted funded research for the past 25 years and has built up a wealth of international experience by leading research, making presentations at international conferences, and leading study abroad trips in Japan, the Netherlands, the Philippines, France, Switzerland, Egypt, South Korea, Spain, Cuba, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Scotland, South Africa, Romania, and Thailand. He provides Pondera with a wealth of international experience. 

Roger has published two books as well as 38 articles and chapters, and has presented 45 times at conferences on various Sociological topics.  He is a member of the American Sociological Association, the Michigan Sociological Association, and the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, Religious Research Association.  Roger latest work was leading a study on the role of NPO’s in providing care to the elderly in Japan.

Education
Roger received a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and History from WMU and a Master’s in and PhD in Sociology from the University of North Carolina.

  • 1978 - James 0. Knauss Outstanding Undergraduate History Award, Western Michigan University.
  • 1978 - Alpha Kappa Delta Sociological Honorary Society, Western Michigan University.
  • 1978-83 - NIHCD Pre-Doctoral Population Fellowship, Carolina Population Center.
  • 1981 - East - West Center, Population Institute Summer Fellowship. Summer research in Honolulu, Hawaii and Manila, Philippines.
  • 1982 - Howard W. Odum Award, top sociology graduate student award, University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill.
  • 1985 - Fulbright Summer Study Award in Korea, U.S. Department of Education and Korean-American Educational Commission.  Summer research in Seoul, Korea.
  • 1987 - Joseph J. Malone Faculty Fellowship, National Council on U.S. and Arab Relations.  Summer research at The American University, Cairo, Egypt.
  • 1989 - Outstanding Teacher Award, given by the Michigan Sociological Association in recognition of exceptional teaching of sociology.
  • 1990 - Long-Term Faculty Research Award, Program for Inter-Institutional Collaboration in Area Studies.  One semester research at the Center for East European and Russian Studies, University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
  • 1992 - Knight Foundation Fellowship. Summer research at the Free University, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.
  • 1992 - The Marvin Olsen Memorial Award, given by the Michigan Sociological Association in recognition of distinguished service to sociology in Michigan.
  • 2002 - Meiji Gakuin University - Hope College Exchange Professor.  One semester research and teaching at Meiji Gakuin University, Tokyo, Japan.
  • 2009 - Freeman Foundation Fellowship.  Award to fund student-faculty research on elderly care in Japan

Personal
Roger currently lives in Holland, MI with his wife.  When he is not teaching or conducting research, he enjoys spending time with his children and grandchildren.
