Susan Laffrey

Susan was an English teacher and served as Chair of the English Department at Brother Rice High School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She also taught English at East Grand Rapids High School, and served as a mentor in the Youth Development Program. Susan has worked with students as a tutor, lacrosse and field hockey coach, and as a youth leader at her church.

Susan has been active in the East Grand Rapids schools and community as a volunteer.  She served as a long-time member and president of the East Grand Rapids Schools Foundation board.  She has been active in the PTSAs of the elementary and middle school, serving in several leadership capacities. Additionally, she has served on the Mayflower Church Council, the Children’s Workshop Board of Directors, and participated in numerous philanthropic efforts in the Grand Rapids area.

In addition to education, Susan has enjoyed other work experiences as a free lance writer, capital campaign manager at Frederik Meijer Gardens and Sculpture Park, and executive member of Young & Rubicam advertising in Detroit.  While Susan has experience in both business and non-profits, working with youth as a coach, teacher and mentor is her passion. Susan graduated with honors from the University of Michigan with a B. A. in English Literature and a Secondary Provisional Teaching Certificate.

Susan and her husband, Brad, reside in East Grand Rapids with their two children, William and Anna.  Susan is an active supporter of her children’s activities, frequently serving as a coach or leader. She enjoys golf, reading, outdoor activities, and travel with family, particularly in Northern Michigan.
